A crow scarecrow, a door draft stopper with a fox tail, a turtle-shaped chamber pot, a rabbit vibrator or a frog-shaped pool float: these familiar objects testify to the ubiquity of the animal as a decorative motif in our everyday lives. They extend a long tradition of representation in which the animal rarely appears as a subject in its own right; rather, it functions as a symbol, decoration or allegory.
In La Fontaine’s Fables, for instance, animals exist as absent presences, serving as vessels for the projection of human ideas and discourses, with each species ultimately disappearing behind its assigned meaning. This project pushes this logic of substitution to its extreme. I staged several fables, replacing the animals with consumer objects shaped in their likeness.
Stylised, inexpensive objects, they reproduce the logic of emptying the living world of its substance that is at work in our representations. The deliberately minimalist stagings draw on the evocative power of the Fables to suggest characters and actions with a minimum of effects. Light, colour and contrast are carefully worked to evoke the world of theatre and representation, producing seductive images that stand in tension with the triviality of the objects depicted.
