A crow scarecrow, a door draft stopper with a fox tail, a turtle-shaped chamber pot, a rabbit vibrator or a frog-shaped pool float: these familiar objects testify to the ubiquity of the animal as a decorative motif in our everyday lives. They extend a long tradition of representation in which the animal rarely appears as a subject in its own right; rather, it functions as a symbol, decoration or allegory.
In La Fontaine’s Fables, for instance, animals exist as absent presences, serving as vessels for the projection of human ideas and discourses, with each species ultimately disappearing behind its assigned meaning. The project takes this logic of substitution to its extreme. I staged several fables by replacing the animals with consumer objects that take on their shapes.
